1x Explore 40 plus 2x Small Core Units
The Explore 40 is the new standard in adventure photography daypacks. We have created a pack to simplify your shooting experience while minimizing physical fatigue. Its intuitive design makes sure camera gear and other essentials like food, water and a mobile phone are always within immediate reach. Our modular Core Unit camera inserts let you customize your shooting experience — not only to your gear requirements, but also to the terrain ahead of you. Whether you’re camping out waiting for an epic moment or scrambling up rocky ascents, the Shimoda system allows you to choose the most efficient camera access for the situation – even on the fly. The adjustable harness with its bear hug-like fit makes sure the pack’s weight doesn’t put pressure on your shoulders and is instead distributed to your hips and front torso. Additionally, the rear panel lets air flow between your back and the pack.
Multiple Access Points:
The Shimoda Explore 40 backpack offers rear and side access options. The side opening is ideal for quick, under-the-arm access without completely removing the pack. The Rear opening allows wide, unobstructed access to the bulk of your gear for less time-sensitive shooting scenarios.
The Explore 40 backpack harness is height adjustable, allowing the same backpack to fit short or tall — male or female — torsos, and ensuring a custom fit for every user. There are four height options allowing approximately four inches in adjustment. Having the correct torso fit enables the internal frame to be much more effective in transferring shoulder stress and weight to rest comfortably on the user’s hips.
Core Unit Modular Camera Insert System:
Perhaps the most forward-thinking modular camera inserts on the market, Shimoda’s Core Units are simple, smart and multifunctional. A user can increase their layout options with two or more Core Units by stacking and shifting how they are placed in the pack. This system allows for rear, side, and top access configurations that be adjusted to suit changing terrain and environmental conditions.
Maximum Core Unit Capacity:
3 Small or 1 Medium + 1 Small or 1 Large
Carry On Friendly:
Our backpacks are sized to meet most airline carry-on requirements. Since carry-on dimensions vary by airplane size and style, and regulations are always changing, we recommend checking with your airline before the flight.

The Small Core Unit is a simple insert with a multitude of uses. It is designed to be used on its own or in combination with up to three additional Core Units to expand the amount of protected equipment space in a Shimoda pack or roller as more camera gear is needed. Breaking down the equipment protection into modules allows the user to minimise weight and bulk and to never carry more padded sections than is needed for the day’s camera kit. The inserts can be configured to allow simultaneous rear, side and top access to the camera kit, and to customise the bag to a user’s shooting style and the terrain ahead of them. The Small Core Unit includes a multi-purpose skin designed to be light and packable. The Skin’s primary function is as a storage case for the padded Core Unit.
When gear is at home and not in use, the skin keeps it sealed inside the Core Unit and dust free. Its secondary function is as a packing cell. A user can fill it with clothing or other common items and pack it in their backpack or carry-on roller. The third function is to act as a shoulder bag, allowing a camera kit to be packed into the Small Core Unit and carried on a quick hike out of basecamp or a casual walk around a city while traveling.
